1944 British India One Rupee – Bombay Mint
Obverse : Features the crowned bust of King George VI facing left. The inscription “GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR” circles the rim, with raised bead border. The portrait is crisply detailed, and surface patina is visible, typical for silver coins of the era.
Reverse : Shows ornate floral wreath motifs of roses, thistle, shamrock, and lotus, encircling “ONE RUPEE INDIA 1944”. Below the bottom lotus, a small dot or diamond marks the Bombay mint. Persian script for “One Rupee” also appears alongside, reflecting colonial bilingual policy.
Specifications: Composed of 50% silver with a weight of approximately 11.66 grams and a diameter of 30.5 mm. Security-edge design helps prevent counterfeiting. The Bombay Mint produced a significant portion of rupee coins during World War II under British colonial administration.
Collector Note : Bombay Mint coins are identified by the dot/diamond below the bottom lotus on the reverse side. This coin embodies both historical and numismatic value, prized for its silver content, colonial-era artistry, and mint-specific rarity.
