This rare bronze coin was issued during the reign of Maharaja Chithira Thirunal Bala Rama Varma II, the last ruling king of the princely state of Travancore, in the year 1114 of the Malayalam Era (1938–1940 AD). The coin features the bust of Bala Rama Varma II facing right on the obverse, symbolizing the royal authority and legacy of the Travancore dynasty. The reverse side depicts a sankha (conch shell) surrounded by sprays, a traditional emblem of the Travancore state and a symbol of prosperity and auspiciousness.
The coin is round, with a diameter of approximately27 mm and weighs around7.45–8.0 grams. It is composed of bronze, reflecting the typical metal used for smaller denominations in Travancore during that period. This particular issue is highly valued by collectors due to its historical significance, royal provenance, and distinctive design elements that capture the cultural and numismatic heritage of Travancore.
This coin is a fine example of the princely state coinage from South India and is sought after by both historians and numismatists for its connection to one of the last ruling Maharajas of Travancore.
